Now that we understand who the Holy Spirit is, it is important for us as believers to recognize that there are moments when the Holy Spirit takes hold of our lives in a special way to empower us.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit refers to an ongoing experience where the Spirit of God actively influences, guides, and empowers a believer. Through this filling, believers receive strength, boldness, wisdom, and spiritual sensitivity to live according to God's will.
"And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit."
— Ephesians 5:18 KJVIndwelling vs. Filling
The indwelling of the Holy Spirit means the Spirit lives in us — this happens once at salvation. Being filled with the Holy Spirit means the Spirit leads and empowers us — this is something believers can experience continually as they walk with God.
"In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise."
— Ephesians 1:13 KJVHow to be Filled with the Holy Spirit
1. Desire and Ask God — Being filled with the Holy Spirit begins with a sincere desire and asking God in prayer.
"If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?"
— Luke 11:13 KJV2. Surrender Your Life to God — The filling of the Holy Spirit requires yielding our lives to God so that His Spirit can lead us.
"I beseech you therefore, brethren… that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God…"
— Romans 12:1 KJV3. Continue in Prayer — When we pray continually, we position ourselves to experience the filling of the Holy Spirit
"And when they had prayed… they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness."
— Acts 4:31 KJV4. Walk in Obedience to God — The Holy Spirit actively works in the lives of those who are willing to obey God.
"…the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him."
— Acts 5:32 KJVpersonal reflection.
