LESSON 04 OF 07

What Is Water
Baptism?

Water Baptism simply put is an outward expression of an inward change.

"Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."

— Romans 6:4 KJV

Can I be baptised without salvation?

Can I be baptised without salvation?

Salvation is the foundation. Baptism is the expression. Baptism does not produce salvation — rather, it demonstrates the new life that salvation has already begun in us.

"Then they that gladly received his word were baptized…"

— Acts 2:41a KJV

Why is Water Baptism Important?

Because Jesus commanded it. Water baptism is a command given by Jesus to His followers as part of making disciples.

"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost."

— Matthew 28:19 KJV

It publicly declares our faith. Baptism is a public expression that a person has believed in Christ and desires to follow Him.

"And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?"

— Acts 8:36-38 KJV

It symbolizes our new life in Christ. Water baptism represents the death of the old life and the beginning of a new life in Christ.

Jesus Himself was baptised, setting an example for believers.

"And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him."

— Matthew 3:16-17 KJV

reflect.

Water baptism is an act of obedience and a public declaration. If you have received salvation, have you taken this step? What is holding you back?

next step

If you haven't been baptised, speak to your pastor or church leader about taking this step. If you have, reflect on the commitment you made that day.
